of defense has invested significant time and resources into improving our nation's energy security. energy security is imperative to the success of today's military. which, by the way, uses 93% of the energy that's used by the federal government, which is the largest user of energy in this country. as our current chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, general dempsey, has said, without improving our energy security we are not merely standing still as a nation, we are falling behind. let's be clear. energy security is national security. and our military leadership understands this. other countries, including some of our strongest competitors, also understand this and we ignore this fact at our own peril. i saw some of the innovations that the navy has adopted earlier this year when i chaired a hearing for the energy subcommittee on water and power down in norfolk aboard the uss kersarge. the purpose was to highlight the advancements the navy continues to make in harnessing renewable energy resources. up with of those resources i saw is homegrown -- homegrown biofuels. and the navy recently

to the defense sector. defense contractors will lose. it's not just big companies, boeings and lockheeds most defense work in the united states is done by independent companies so there are small company, software companies, provides that provide do the defense industry, small businesses that will get hit. the estimate the average family will pay up to $3500 more in taxes. that's if the worst happens. bottom line, what it will do, suzanne, it will reduce gdp, economic growth, that's stuff that creates jobs and slow the economy down to we'reoo sensitive to being slowed down. >> explain now the debt ceiling plays in the talks. >> the debt ceiling will run out january, maybe early february, depending on how the treasury moves things around. last time they were able to move payments around so they didn't miss anything. that's part of this. it's not part of the fiscal cliff, but it's an area that the republicans feel very strongly about. they're use it as leverage. john boehner said as much to the president. people say the debt ceiling thing is an albatross. most countries don't have a debt limit.

so quickly that firefighters actually had to go into a defensive mode, fight it from the outside of the building. four units had severe fire damage, two from water and other types of damage. 18 people affected in all. most people were out when firefighters arrived, but the captain that i spoke with said that the firefighter who got hurt suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck and a concussion. >> by a piece of large sheetrock, a ceiling apparently that had fallen in while he was in the stairwell. so it had fallen from a considerable height, about halfway up. >> reporter: now, firefighters tell me they had problems with access. this is a really tight complex, very narrow roads. the building has attics, it has void places so they sprayed so much water on it that there's concern even this morning about the stability of the building. now, they mentioned last night there are a number of reports went out about a cat that was missing. fortunately they were able to find that cat and reunite him with his owner. as for a cause, they say they still don't know what started it but they do b
